Evil是邪恶的意思，lesser意思是比较小的，次要的。说the lesser of two evils，就是说在两种令人不快的选择中，选择一个伤害相对小的，也就是中文里说的“两害相权取其轻”。

它其实就是在来描述一种困境(dilemma)，这是一种不管选哪个都存在缺陷的难题，任何一种选择都会在某种程度上造成伤害，只能选一个伤害少的。和between a rock and a hard place有点类似，意思是在两种都不愉快的情况中做出选择。

这个俗语源于希腊神话奥德修斯的故事，他必须要选择对付怪物“锡拉”还是“卡吕布狄斯”。奥德修斯选择与“锡拉”交战，结果损失了几个水手，而不是整艘船。

最初，the lesser of two evils 中的选择仅指道德层面。随着时代的发展，这个俗语也可以用于更普通的情况，比如选择是吃一个高脂肪含量的玉米卷，还是一个高糖含量的糖果棒。两种选择都对你有害处，在这种情况下我们就会使用这个说法。在日常生活中，人们经常说成：
